長崎は、鎖国下の江戸時代にあっても、中国商船の出入りを許された唯一の港であった。孔子廟は中国春秋時代（紀元前551-479年）の思想家孔子の霊廟であり、儒学の志を伝えている。東アジアには多くの孔子廟が建つが、ここ長崎の孔子廟は最も美しい廟の一つである。論語16018文字の書かれた左右の回廊前には、高弟72賢人がずらりと並ぶ。荘厳な中国建築の伝統美は、見る者に鮮烈な印象を残す。
